The main defense for Revolutionary America was located around Boston, New York and Philadelphia and consisted of militias, companies and regiments responsible for protecting their homes and keeping order within their communities.

That force never exceeded 1,500 troops and remained largely dormant until April 13, 1783 when George Washington laid down his sword to serve as commander-in-chief during an interregnum between the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. By this time there were nearly 30 state militias or volunteer companies frontiersmen who had volunteered their services and received certificates of service. Many of these men would also carry innovative and effective ways to get off the road or train safe as they journeyed west with supplies.
