U.S. Navy Submarines

The United States Navy currently operates twenty-eight ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) out of thirteen bases located throughout the world. These submarines are capable of launching nuclear as well as conventional weapons. Each submarine is equipped with a 650 ton gross weight pressurized water reactor and can carry up to 154 nuclear warheads. Some of the submarines have been placed in service more than 30 years ago, and are still operational today.

The U.S. Navy Museum is a museum about the naval history of the United States, located on the historic grounds of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. The museum is operated by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command and is open to the public year round. It was founded in 1953 as the Naval Historical Center (NHC), located at the NHC’s current site in Washington, D.C., but moved to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on 5 November 2005

The course curriculum varies from branch of service to branch of service, but all branches train recruits in basic seamanship, as well as swimming, water safety and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

U.S. Navy Destroyers

U.S. Navy destroyers are powered strictly by the power produced by the ship’s central propulsion units, although support from jet turbines is used when needed. Although they are referred to as destroyers in the U.S. Navy, this designation refers only to warships that carry guided missiles and other weapons—not cruisers nor aircraft carriers, which have a separate designation in the U.S. Navy, although they may be referred to as ships of similar size and role such as ‘cruiser-destroyer’.
