National Hockey League (NHL)
The National Hockey League is a professional ice hockey league based in Canada. It is the most popular sport in the country, with almost 30 million Canadians playing at least once during their lives.
The NHL has 30 member clubs, each of which plays an 82-game schedule from September through March. Each club is owned by its local community and operated as a business venture under the supervision of an individual team owner/president or general manager/coach who hires its own staff as well as coaches and players from other teams to fill out its roster each season.
The season runs from October through April and includes four divisions: Central (formerly known as the Campbell Conference), Pacific (formerly known as the Wales Conference), Northeast (formerly known as the Norris Conference) and Southeast (formerly known as American Division). There are three conferences within each division: Atlantic leads all teams eastward into Quebec City; Central leads all teams westward across Lake Ontario toward northern Wisconsin; while Pacific takes us down along Baja California.”

NHL Ugly Sweater
The NHL Ugly Sweater is an annual tradition in the NHL. It began in 1947 when the Montreal Canadiens wore their white sweaters during a game against the Detroit Red Wings.[1] Since then, every team in each NHL division has competed for this honor, with each team trying to make it as uncomfortable as possible for their opponents by wearing ugly sweaters.
The best-looking teams are awarded points at the end of each season based on how many other teams they beat while wearing an ugly sweater.[2] If you want your team’s name engraved on the Stanley Cup, you’ll have to win it first!

The National Hockey League (NHL) is an unincorporated not-for-profit association which operates a major professional ice hockey league in North America. It is composed of 30 member clubs, of which 23 play in the United States and 7 play in Canada.
The NHL was formed by owners of the National Hockey Association (NHA) after that league disbanded on December 17, 1917 over issues surrounding player salaries and player rights, with two other leagues emerging to compete for players during the next decade. The two leagues merged into one known as the “National Hockey Association” or “NHA”. This merger became effective on November 6th 1918; however, this new union did not last long and eventually dissolved itself into two separate organizations: one being known today as the NHL while another organization would later become known as the NHLPA (Professional Athletes Association).
The NHL draws many highly skilled players from all over the world and currently has players from approximately 20 different countries. Canadians have historically constituted the majority of the players in the league, with an increasing percentage of American and European players in recent seasons.

Players are selected by teams based on their ability to play hockey at a high level, their physical characteristics (such as size), and their attitude towards the game. There are no specific requirements for being eligible to be drafted into professional leagues; however, many prospective NHL draft picks will have been invited by an amateur club or university team where they played for three years prior to being drafted into major junior or college hockey programs where they may also receive scholarships if they win awards during those years.
The National Hockey League was organized on November 26, 1917, at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal after the suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which had been founded in 1909 in Renfrew, Ontario.

The NHA disbanded and a new league started up with eight teams from existing Canadian cities and two American teams. This league would be known as simply “The NHL”.
In 1927 there were nine teams; three more joined by 1930. From 1930 until 1974 there were 13 teams; only six remained active between 1967-1969 when five other franchises folded due to financial reasons or relocation (two relocated). Since 1975 there have been five divisions with only three divisions ever having more than two franchises active during any given season: Western Conference (1973–75); Eastern Conference (1982–84); Central Division/Western Conference II(1985–87); Pacific Division/Eastern Conference III(1988–90), etc…
