As the World’s Most Famous Hockey Team, the Montreal Canadiens primarily play at the Bell Center. The venue is also home to an AHL team that play in the American Hockey League. The team was founded as a member of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1909, but were forced out of this league after two years of existence due to financial problems. They entered into a temporary arrangement with the National Hockey Association (NHA), which led them to become one of two teams that contested a Stanley Cup playoff format prior to World War I. The Canadiens continued playing in this league until 1926 when they shifted their focus to become an independent franchise once again. Thereafter, they played a total of four seasons in mid-level professional leagues until being reactivated by NHL commissioner Clarence Campbell Sr., who then initiated a return to Toronto to become the St. Patricks.[|>
