Fort Myer is one of the oldest military installations in the United States and the largest military post ever to remain solely under military control. The site was originally established as Camp Washington in 1846, but was renamed after George Washington Parke Custis, who developed the Arlington Estate. In 1898, following the Spanish-American War, Congress authorized President William McKinley to construct a colonial fort in order to establish national security and federal law enforcement. The only living history museum in the United States dedicated to preserving and promoting American military culture, Fort Myer is a major tourist attraction for those visiting the Washington D.C. area.
