The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. They are members of the Western Conference’s Central Division. The Avalanche began play as one of six teams in the NHL’S Central Division in 1972, winning their first Stanley Cup championship in 1996 and repeating as champions for the first time since 1991. They have won one conference title (1996), two Presidents’ Trophies (2006–07; 2009–10), two conference regular season titles (2006–07; 2012–13), and three division titles (2003–04; 2007–08). Since joining the NHL, they have finished between first and third place every year except 1974-75 when they finished ninth out on tiebreakers with Los Angeles.)

General Manager: Joe Sakic

Joe Sakic is the general manager for the Colorado Avalanche. He was originally drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 1987, but was traded to the Edmonton Oilers before ever playing a game for them. He spent his entire career with those two teams before retiring in 2002.

Sakic has been inducted into both the Hockey Hall of Fame and Professional Hockey Writers Association Hall of Fame as well as winning three Stanley Cups with Colorado (1996-97). He’s also an eight-time NHL All-Star who competed at two Olympics (1984 & 2002), winning one silver medal and two gold medals respectively!

Head Coach: Jared Bednar

You may have heard of him before, but now you can find out more about Jared Bednar.

He was born on June 13th, 1981 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and played for the Detroit Red Wings before becoming a head coach in 2010 with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He also served as an assistant coach for Team Canada at both Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics (where they won silver).

Arena/Stadium: Pepsi Center


The Pepsi Center is the home of both the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. It’s located in downtown Denver, Colorado and has a capacity of 19,155.

The arena was opened on October 1st 1995 as an 18-year-old arena by naming rights sponsor PepsiCo Inc., which also owns Mountain Dew and Gatorade drinks. The naming rights expired after 10 years in 2005 when it was known as Fleet Financial Field then became known simply as “The Arena”.

The Colorado Avalanche are a team to watch in the NHL this season. They have a great head coach, Jared Bednar, and a great general manager, Joe Sakic.

The Avalanche have been very successful lately by bringing in many new players such as Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog who were both acquired from the Ottawa Senators last year. The two players combined for 34 goals and 63 points last year as well as finishing second in scoring between them (Landeskog had 15 more points). This season they hope that those numbers will continue with more ice time under their belt after being traded away from Ottawa along with Alex Burmistrov who was also traded during his rookie season where he recorded nine goals during his entire campaign (sixth overall).

Pierre Lacroix

Pierre Lacroix was the general manager of the Colorado Avalanche from 1995 to 2002. He led the team to two Stanley Cup Championships in 1996 and 2001.

He also played for Montreal Canadiens from 1969 to 1974, winning two Stanley Cups with them in 1971 and 1973. In addition, he was named one of “The 50 Greatest NHL Players” by Sporting News in 2003.
