The U.S. Army is a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces responsible for the land based elements of power projection, including infantry ground forces and support units. The modern US Army traces its origins to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress created the Continental Army and commissioned George Washington as its Commander-in-Chief. The Army was established with a core of minutemen plus militia forces during the Revolutionary War on land against the British Empire. After victory in the War of Independence, Congress would authorize another military force that would grow into the modern United States Army Corps of Engineers, which is still called up today to build military bases along coastal areas for naval ships to dock at. Though there were other attempts by various people since then at establishing a professional army service in America, it wasn’t until after WWII that US armed forces transitioned from being part-time citizen militia to full-time professional warriors and that efforts started out at building a more powerful military so they can defend themselves when needed to protect against foreign invasion within their own territories.
